Motorcycle School - How to Pass a Driver's License Test
Completion of a motorcycle safety course often does away with the requirement to take the driver's license test. The course will train you to anticipate other drivers' movements and keep a safe distance behind them and ride within your skill level.
The training consists of both instructor-led classroom sessions and hands-on riding. Be punctual. Late arrivals could cause disruption to the schedule of the class.
Classroom Instruction
If you're just beginning to learn about riding or just need to sharpen your skills, the MSF Basic Rider Course (BRC) is ideal for you. The class is a combination of classroom instruction and real motorcycle/scooter operation training in an off-street, controlled environment. The BRC is designed for beginner riders and can help avoid MVC's road test. It also teaches you street strategies such as maximum braking efficiency, maneuvering in tight situations and passing, and avoiding dangers.
The five-hour ePackage one (eP1) eCourse can be taken as a stand-alone course or as a prerequisite to the hands-on portion of the full BRC. The eCourse includes videos, interactive lessons and graphics that allow you to learn the fundamentals of motorcycling. Discounts on insurance may be offered to you after successful completion of the course.
The ePackage 1 must be completed in 30 days from the start date of your BRC course in order to receive a certificate and participate in the riding skill evaluation. If the eCourse cannot be completed, no refund will be granted. To take part in the hands-on BRC participants must possess a VALID driver's license.
The CLASS program is a two-day riding class that allows you to further improve your riding skills in a safe and secure riding setting using a street legal scooter or motorcycle supplied by the school. The course is taught by MSF certified instructors. The focus is on building your confidence as well as your knowledge of the operating systems on your motorcycle or scooter. The class is comprised of instruction in the classroom as well as riding exercises, and a riding-skills evaluation.
The course is based upon the teachings of 3 time AMA Superbike Champ Reg Pridmore and his hand picked team of instructors. Their philosophies have been honed over the course of 50 years of racing, riding and teaching. These concepts are conveyed in a simple way to make them simple to comprehend and put into practice. The result is a better rider who is more confident, proficient and more secure.
Practice Range
You'll spend a significant portion of your training on a practice area, where you can practice and test your riding abilities. The range is generally closed to traffic so you can practice in safety. Your RiderCoach will take you through the basic controls of your vehicle and the procedure before taking you on the range. Your instructor will assess your skills at the conclusion of every session on the range. These exercises include limited-space maneuvers and braking. If you successfully pass the riding-skill evaluation, you will receive a BRC Road Test Waiver Completion Card (a license waiver).

When you take the motorcycle safety course you'll likely spend about five hours in the classroom absorbing the basics of your motorcycle and its operation before you take off to ride on the range. Your instructor will teach you the basics of riding a motorbike, including shifting, turning and straight-line riding. Then, you'll move on to more complex maneuvers like emergency braking, swerving, and emergency braking. The course will conclude with a final riding-skill evaluation at which point you'll receive an award of completion and may qualify for a discount on motorcycle insurance.
In many states, a motorbike safety course is required to get a license. Check with your local DMV if a course or recommendation is required. Enroll in an Motorcycle Safety Foundation approved program. This could be used to get a waiver of the road test by the DMV.

Feedback from Instructors
"The instructors were extremely professional and knowledgeable. They truly love their students and that shows. They will teach you all of the basics that you must know about riding a motorbike. I highly recommend this course to anyone who rides at any age or level of experience."
The classroom instruction was thought-provoking and informative. The feedback from the instructor was the best part of the riding instruction. They did not simply say "OK" They told you exactly what you did wrong,, for example, "You were looking down at the handlebars" or "You did not give it enough gas" or "Your wrists were bent" or "You switched gears too quickly" or "You weren't pushing down on the foot peg". Then they showed you how to repair it.

This kind of personal coaching is the kind of coaching you get in a quality training course and it is what separates this class from many other classes. Some riders may think that this is too harsh, but I believe it's essential to give students the best chance of passing the test and staying safe on a bike.
I've attended other courses in the past, and there was no individual feedback from the instructor. There's no reason why instructors should have the final say on the degree to which a student is able to pass the course unless they're a clear threat or hindering other students in the group.

In the second portion of the course you will learn about road skills such as brakes, shifting gears, accelerating as well as turning and swerving. This part of the course will last until you have passed the riding skill test. This part of the course will determine if you receive your motorcycle license road test waiver card. The test will include the maneuvers that an DMV driver's examiner will be looking for during your driver's test. The test can be challenging and if you fail to pass it's not the end of the world. Just work hard to pass the next time and keep up the good work.
If you pass the exam the instructor will award you a certificate of completion that can be used to obtain a discount on insurance for motorcycles. You will also be a certified rider and can now legally operate your bike on the streets.
